Brontosaurus

Today I am thinking about the Brontosaurus. It was discovered during the “bone wars”: a palaeontological pissing contest in the late 1860s between Americans: Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh. They were in a big rush to criticize each other in scientific mags and best each other in the race to discover the most species. Cope accused Marsh of moving bones in New Jersey and all sorts of drama. Anyway, in 1877, Marsh published incomplete findings of a dinosaur he named the Apatosaurus. In 1879 he published a sketch of this vertebrae. The Apatosaurus was about 50 ft long….

POV pink sunsets

“I feel so anxious. What if I shouldn’t behave properly? You know i never had tea at a manse before, and I’m not sure that I know all the rules of etiquette, although I’ve been studying the rules given in the Etiquette Department of the Family Herald ever since I came here. I’m so afraid I’ll do something silly or forget to do something I should do. Would it be good manners to take a second helping of anything if you wanted to VERY much?” “The trouble with you, Anne, is that you’re thinking too much about yourself. You should…

false lashes

I have been too busy this week to even write my stories. That means I’ve been too busy to be healthy. Michael’s doing two plays back to back, performances and rehearsals day and night. So I get Nora full time plus I will have the dog and cat and my house guest and my seven jobs. And a few days ago another kid gave Nora lice again after being clear for so long…so I’ve been nitpicking and doing heaps of wash… Today it came to a head. I auditioned for something I really wanted. Great director, one of my most…

restless

I bike with no gloves because I want to feel the cold today. I want to feel all tough mudder despite the fact my helmet is a pink cheetah pattern – admit it – you want it. Crossfit Charlie is wearing off on me. You should see what I can “snatch”. This morning I am an actor, this afternoon I am a coach, this evening I am a script editor until eleven and now I’m a writer until one. And I haven’t returned a call. Nothing personal. They say, these days, it isn’t fashionable to be “busy”. Oh to be…

8 year olds and the circle of life

I pick up Nora in the car with one of her best buddies in the back. ME: Nora, Bunny, I know we were rushed this morning but I need to apologize. I was a cow. I was a total cow this morning.” NODIN: Tell me about it! (agreeing with me) NORA: You were? It’s my fault I forgot about my homework. We stop off at Mikey’s to walk the dog and pick up some things. The sun is shining low and golden on Trout Lake park. Merchant and Ivory would approve. My old dog Tartuffe pulls on the leash to…

Philip

One of the greatest actors of our generation died today. I don’t have a whole lot to say. I mourn the loss of his life, I think of his kids and wife, I think of all the artists he will not nurture, I think of all the plays he will not direct, I think of all the films he will not make. Though Philip died of addiction and my friend of a brain tumor, I have to admit this reminds me of Jeremy Tow, who died near this age, way too young, and one of the most talented people I…

dignified pajamas

Today Nora says, “Mom, we need a pajama party.” And she’s right. So we head down to Memphis blues and order something slow cooked and Elvis, minus the peanut butter and the pussycats. Then we bag the 101 Dalmations at the Black Dog video store (if only because we can) get home and snuggle up in our tackiest fuzziest plaid pajammies with our chosen libations: hot chocolate and marshmallows for Nora, Temptations for Licorice and 1.5 oz of Bookers bourbon on ice for Mommy. I enjoy the evening 80%. 20% of me is very anxious that I spent money I…

odd couple of miracles

I am writing to you half corked. A bit of an experiment. I didn’t expect to be blotto this evening, but it has been quite the adventure. A very busy day was followed by a mad cap evening. I picked up Serwa, a mother of a child Nora plays with at school, and I took her to the Arts Club opening of The Odd Couple. To my understanding, she had never been to a live theatre production before.  She thought I was taking her to a movie and was very surprised to learn we were seeing live actors. And because…

in heat

My cat is in heat. This is not a euphemism.  Being a first time cat owner, this is a whole new world for me. I was going to get her fixed this next week…but I missed the moon and the witching hour is upon us. This fur ball is hormones on roller-skates. She’s purring a deep low rumble: Barry White with claws. Then a yearning yowl as intense and wanting as any cougar stuck alone at the bar at last call. She presses her little fuzzy face against the window “let me out, LET ME OUT, my destiny is waiting!”…
